A new curate has been welcomed at Selby Abbey.
Reverend Dan Thomas was ordained by the Archbishop of York in York Minster on Saturday, June 27. The following day, he was welcomed as curate by the congregation at Selby Abbey. Rev Thomas will work in the community and assist in church while continuing his training, leading to ordination as priest in one year’s time. Previously, Dan worked as a mathematics teacher before moving to the Parish with his wife Alice and starting his training for priesthood, which has largely been on Zoom due to coronavirus restrictions.
Vicar Canon John Weetman said: “It is great to welcome Dan and Alice to Selby Abbey where Dan will serve his curacy over the next few years. “He joins us at a challenging time in the life of the Abbey (as it is for so many others) with many of our services and activities still restricted as a result of the pandemic, however we hope that very soon we will be able to resume something akin to ‘normal life’ at the Abbey. “Dan will be able to be fully involved in the life of the church and the community and to enjoy all that the Abbey and Selby has to offer.”
